I've been posting simultaneously to both this journal and Dreamwidth under the same name ever since I moved there. But. It seems to me that most if not all of my friendslist has migrated at this point. Is there anyone who wants me to continue posting here, particularly?

The art this time is for an original story I've been meaning to pimp anyway. Some of you may remember Maldoror_gw, if you were ever in the GW or Naruto fandoms? She's amazing, in general. She wrote a short-novel length original fic called Out, about a japanese businessman who stumbles into another dimension of life around Earth, where he meets a savage ancient Assyrian warrior, and the two of them have adventures and also sexual tension. But Mal's great strength as a writer is how much she clearly loves detail about the places, cultures, and environments involved; the contrast between cultural expectations in modern Japan and ancient Assyria alone are entertaining in her hands.

In the bad ending to Ciqeci's Mascotverse, there is this coda: and once Zack had this dream where they went to Wutai and threw themselves on Godo's mercy, and Sephiroth became some sort of silk-wearing honorary Wutain prince after leading them to victory against the evil forces of Shinra...but that was their first night out of the lab, and he tended to blame the mako poisoning.

I was watching this video, and I kept thinking...This may be an artifact of my time in fandom, where love and sex seem to be used to do everything ever, but I really enjoy using the language and imagery of romantic love to discuss something like love for one's country, people, regiment, tribe, etc. That mix of the personal and the political seems to me to be really intensely effective. It catches your attention, because you don't expect it, and it highlights really quickly both a) how much bigger than one person the issue at stake is (since you start with the expectation set up by romance that this is something that really only bares consequences for two-or-so people) and b) how intensely, personally important the issue is (since you're using such evocative language, instead of the drier, more academic language we're used to hearing such issues discussed in).

Thoughts?

So...I was really going to focus on that whole...you know, packing thing. And if I had to do something fandom-y, well, I have all those mathoms I offered...

Taking a break from my internets!hiatus to say: My birthday is coming up! Clearly, this means that I should do another mathoms post. *nod* BUT, because it's my bithday and I love this trope, this will be the genderswitch version.

Pick one character from any fandom in my tags list (possibly others, ask and I'll let you know). I will give you EITHER art or at least 100 words of fic, no icons, songs, etc. this time, of the character genderswitched. You can specify whether they have always been the other gender or it's a sudden change if you care for one rather than the other, and if I post your mathom early you're welcome to ask for another.

I will try to have them all finished and posted by August 3rd, but depending on how much time we have as we move and also how quickly we get internet at the new place, it may be a bit late.

Since three weeks ago, I have taken finals, graduated from college, helped my sister pack up and clean her whole apartment, and driven across the country.

Two weeks from now, I will be getting married, flying to japan for two weeks, coming back and packing up/cleaning MY whole apartment, and moving to Seattle. Where I'll have to find a new place and move in. And then I'm going to England with my grandmom.

So if you're wondering where I am, that's it. I probably won't be around with any great regularity until September, but I DO definitely intend to come back. In the mean time, as always, feel free to friend me/defriend me/whatever. Leave me a comment on this post if you want me to friend you back or anything.

If you post something you think I'd like, I'd LOVE it if you wanted to drop me a link. I expect I'll be so stupidly far behind on my F-list (hah--as though I'm not now) that I'll just kind of throw my hands up and go from whenever I have free time again. And I KNOW I'll end up missing something awesome. -_-;

We went to see the new Star Trek movie tonight.

...Some of you might know that I am kind of a movie curmudgeon; I expect to hate nearly everything I see, and have significant complaints about even my favorite movies. And I was never a big Star Trek fan anyway--no hatin, just not a lot of interest besides a vague appreciation of Spock. But I walked out of this movie kind of stunned because... I-I have no complaints! It was just genuinely awesome the whole time.

I love every character there was, and feel that the casting director should win an internet. The reasoning behind the differences with the original stuff seemed reasonable and made sense. I actually laughed out loud during certain scenes; others had me holding my breath. The pacing was well developed and I never got bored during scenes.

It probably also doesn't surprise anyone that I was in a total Fangirl Flail over Young!Spock the whole time; Arrogant, highly intelligent and competent, reserved, dark hair/eyes and pale skin--why no, I don't totally have a type, why do you ask cough, Snape, cough. I found his heterosexuality a bit pastede on yey! but I can't say I'm actually complaining because a) the woman is really hot and also pretty freaking awesome in her own right and b) the friendship with Kirk is kept so awesome anyway that I don't really mind the lessening of sexual tension (though I also wouldn't say it's entirely missing). I am completely ready to slash Spock with everybody ever in the entire movie, up to and including Spock/Spock. <3

All in all, I had a lovely evening. :Db

So this is brief and weird and probably OOC as hell because I haven't touched the canon in months and I think my Felix muse is channeling Matsumoto Jun rather too much for anyone's comfort. But I wanted something new to celebrate the move to Dreamwidth and I can't do digital art in class the way I can scribble something out. So. I promise I'll stop pretending I can write and go back to the pretty pictures soon. :D
