Feel free to consider any of the second categories as recs: I'll only be linking things I thought were especially good, so. I'll be adding to both of these as new fic comes to my attention. Pollen for Dreams: Ryuuki and Seiran discuss flowers, and take a moment to play pretend. All of branch's work, but this story in particular, have a lot going on underneath, unstated. It's allusive, and I think that indirect quality is what I like best about her prose. Worksafe.
Still Air: Ryuuki has a nightmare; Seien-aniue wakes him up; then there's porn. AND WHAT PORN IT IS. So delicate and gentle and perfect to these particular characters. I love how tender they both are with each other. And, of course, Ryuuki's ever-present little flashes of submission never fail to make me squee. Ryuuki was blushing for real, now, half with embarrassment and half with sneaking enjoyment of Seien scolding him properly, the way an older brother should. Not worksafe. <3
If Only: Seiran/Ryuuki D/s. I. This might be my bulletproof kink for that kind of thing talking, but do you really need to know more? So tender and loving, the way Seiran knows just what Ryuuki needs... and Ryuuki's faithfullness to Seien-aniue sends my brain straight to the bad place, as always. <333 Not worksafe.

Five Things Kouyuu is Secretly Embarrassed About: Now, in the interests of full disclosure? I love five-things fic. Somehow, this format always seems to produce pure gold. But! This one in particular is adorable because of the way it pendulums back and forth between Kouyuu's past with Reishin and Kouyuu's (maybe?)future with Shuuei, and the way both men drive him nuts, and he's just so generally bad at naming his feelings, lets them get all tangled up into this adorable muddle. Just, a really cute, funny list. Worksafe.
Kitten Laws: It's Saimono anthro. I know. I know. But read it anyway because it is bitty!Kouyuu and Reishin having no idea how this parenting thing is supposed to work and adorable adorable adorable. By turns funny and heartbreaking, but total win throughout. One minor complaint? I do not know who this Kouru is. I believe she means Kurou. It's a little annoying, but doesn't much detract from an otherwise excellent fic. Worksafe.
Bumps and Bruises: A series of short vignettes involving times Kouyuu wound up sick or hurt, growing up. This one is firmly on the paternal side of the ambiguity in this relationship, though there are moments where he's aware of things you wouldn't expect. A nice look at their relationship. Worksafe.
To Stand by You: Ryuuki and Seiran have a bath. It's a nice, quiet moment, affectionate more than shippy, though tinted with a bit of attraction on Ryuuki's side of things.
Oh, Bucket!: Everyone gets drunk, and Seiran is convinced the bucket has a personal vendetta against him. The whole thing is funny, but I would have lol'd just for this: Once, he vaguely remembered loudly declaring he was the lost prince. But luckily Ensei's claim to be an Amazonia warrior queen, made the whole thing come off like a joke, even when Ryuuki threw his arms around them and swore his undying loyalty. Worksafe.

Chichiri_no_da
Genius isn't all it's cracked up to be: Nice long plotty fic about Kouyuu as a shinshi. My favorite thing about this is how unreliable a narrator Kouyuu is; he's young, and has even poorer social skills than he does during the series, and it's brilliant watching all the signs be there and having him miss it. There's hints of romance between Kouyuu and Shuuei, but the romance isn't, I think, the focus. Worksafe.
Lost and Found: Kouyuu gets lost, wanders around in a maze of bushes until he thinks he's going to DIE, and then has a REALLY bad day. Totally embarrased!Kouyuu is one of my favorite kinds. <3 Telling more would give it away, but just let me say that it is hilarious and hot and that I am pretty much convinced that this is going to come back to haunt Kouyuu for some time. <333 Not worksafe.
Training Can't Start Too Early: Porn_battle fic for the prompt "Reishin/Kouyuu, first meeting/prostitution". The thing that really gets me about Reishin as a character in general and about Reishin/Kouyuu in particular is how beautifully, obnoxiously ambiguous they are. And this story takes that ambiguity and jumps all over it until I want to make this rec just "Ambiguity! SQUEE!!!" except how singularly unhelpful that would be. So. A hungry, homeless boy takes shelter in a whorehouse overnight, Reishin is a terrible customer, and then there are cuddles. In the whorehouse. I can't decide if this story is really cute or really really wrong, and I'd love it just for that, gorgeous prose aside. <3
The Marriage Proposal: Reishin/Kouyuu, fucking in the rain, another porn_battle fic! *feels spoiled* Kouyuu objects rather vehemently to arrangements for his marriage, and Reishin won't tolerate not finding out why. With the tips of his fingers on Kouyuu's jawline, he skilfully manipulated the younger man like a fine instrument, showing him just where to press, just how to open and tilt his head in just the right way. Unf. This is why I love May/December pairings. Such beautiful, sensuous writing, and as always, her characterization reads as spot on for me. <3 Love love love this fic.
Masked: For my request "Reishin/Houju, sensory deprivation" for Spread Joy Day And oh man. IT'S SO GOOD. It takes the whole concept of mask-wearing on an every-day basis and just PERVS THAT SHIT RIGHT OUT. Also, I will never get tired of Reishin and Houju's snark-filled, woobie, evil-best-friend power struggles. <333 Best present ever.

Gutsy
Shouka/Reishin, how not to be an asshat,: Really funny take on a Shouka who understands conditioning very well indeed. Also, Reishin torn between his own natural brattiness and a brother who's a horrible horrible tease will never not be hilarious awesome. Plus! Bonus delayed/denied orgasm, which is always scorching hot. *happy mitsu face* Not worksafe.

The Hidden Room: For the porn battle prompt "Saiunkoku Monogatari, Reishin/Kouyuu, the hidden room at the center of the compound." I. D/s, in a slightly less loving way than I write them but still pretty sweet and smoking hot. Bonus bondage, and toys, and masochism talk and !!! Insanejournal brings the sexy like HOTSHIT. Unf.

Iced Wine
Mark of Thorns, Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 : I'm not entirely sure that I believe the people in this fic as Reishin and Kouyuu, but they're well-written and follow believably from the circumstances the fic posits, so it may be just a difference of interpretation. BUT! This is long and plotty and full of intrigue and you get to see Reishin destroy someone. So. <3 Worksafe.

Surviving the Mourning Process: Poor Kouyuu. Everyone else around him is COMPLETELY INSANE. T^T Really funny fic centering on life in the palace after Shuurei leaves for Sa Provence.Mostly gen, some hints of Shuuei/Kouyuu and possibly Ryuuki/Seien/Shuurei. "Ryuuki reserved most of his fits of insanity for Shuurei, who he was just as smitten with now as he had been all year, but every so often he’d be triggered off on a “wah! Ani-ue!” rant"

Truth
In Case of Doubt, It Is Best to Err on the Side of Mercy: In the midst of an Imperial Audit, Kouyuu uncovers some unexpected information, gets drunk, and receives a kiss. Truth's Kouyuu voice is very good, and she (he?) manages very well to walk the thin line between paternal and ...something else that so characterizes this pairing to me. Also, the atmosphere of being drunk and nearly alone in the middle of the night in a mostly-abandoned building is gorgeous and worth a read all on its own. Worksafe.
Springtime:, The events of a certain night in early spring in the Imperial city. Kouyuu... isn't very good at the social. All around him are these delicately tangled relationships, these bruised and imperfect men who live in them, and he just so clearly doesn't understand or know what to do with any of it. It's a really quiet, endearing piece. Primarily gen, some hints of M/M, though it remains entirely worksafe.

A Quiet Lunch: Reishin/Ryuuki/Houju pornings. Ryuuki wears his idiot-act, and pushes all of Reishin's buttons, shamelessly, to hilarious and then scorching-hot results. All three of them are so in character the whole time, and even if it is kind of an odd pairing, it's totally worth a read. Not worksafe.
Criteria:
Mini!Kouyuu takes first place in the national Qualifying exams. Reishin is well pleased. Houju thinks they're both retarded. Although the dialogue is occasionally jarringly modern, this has some cute lines and images, so. I mean. How could you not love a fic that gives you the image of tiny!Kouyuu saying, "Reishin-sama must truly be the most astonishing lover in all the kingdom!" ? I lol'd. Not worksafe, but just barely.
Behind an Unfolded Fan: Reishin's love for and desire to protect the people he holds dear lead him to be a total asshat. This is why we all love him so much. <3 A really engaging look at the character, worksafe.
Plum Wine: Kouyuu doesn't come home when Reishin expects him too, so the obvious answer is that Reishin has to break into Houju's bedroom in the middle of the night and complain. Obviously. I never seem to get tired of stories where Reishin and Kouyuu's relationship is just weird neither really paternal or honestly romantic. And Reishin and Houju's friendship/antagonism is neverendingly entertaining. :D Probably not worksafe? Stuff is alluded to, but entirely offscreen.
December 1st: Kouyuu gets sick; everyone worries about him a lot. I'm reccing this one purely on the strength of the bit with Ryuuki in the middle, even as much as I love Reishin and Kouyuu, because DAMN. Ryuuki's memories of being sick when he was little, and knowing how not to be seen, and his remedy... The young man had survived for years while everyone around him was actively wishing him dead. Just go read it. You will wibble. Be prepared. Worksafe.
