Digital Devil Saga 2, Second Playthrough

A couple of interesting things:
1. Man. That intro cinema. O.O How bein' so cute, and yet so broken and wrong at the same time? "But Serph and Sera are way ahead of us!!" That's... true, Heat, and yet... <3

2.Everyone in the real world has the same gray eyes as the unawakened in the Junkyard. I. I'm not sure yet what to make of that, but I think it's really cool.

3. I totally missed all the posters/books on shelves/etc that you could look at, the first time through. "This is called a kitchen." And the diary. Oh man. This game doesn't pull any punches, does it. T^T

4.Oh Fred. I'd forgotten how very much I like your prickly ass. <3 I guess anyone who has to babysit Roland that long--esp pre-Gale and Argilla-- would develop some mighty mighty bullshit filters, but still... And that look you give Roland during the "give us Sera or Cielo gets it" scene? Priceless. I have never seen so eloquent a "YOU ARE SO FUCKING GROUNDED" face. :Db

5. I wouldn't say I like Roland much yet in this playthrough; and particularly not the crazy helplessly-grinning love I have for pretty much all the embryon? But I'm starting to see where he'd be a really fun character to work with for fic. He's so literary! I keep waiting for him to try and quote Byron at us. <3 But, man, what an ass.

Yeah, Roland took a while to grow on me, too -- he starts with the terrible handicap of not being Heat, and then that's compounded with "is a huge loser," so!

But I started to really appreciate him on the second go-through, because he's so deeply not an epic-scale character, so psychologically underpowered for this Leading The Resistance thing, and he's sort of muddling through anyway -- at least, once Gale shames him into it. Watching him try to become a better person was pretty cool.

also ajskdh, yes, the diary. I'd forgotten that. oh man, the hurting. ♥

I. Really actively disliked him on my first run-through, for a lot of reasons, and yeah, not least simply because he wasn't Heat. But...by the end, I kind of got the feeling I was being unfair, as poor first impressions frequently lead me to be, so... He's one of the main reasons I'm giving this game another play-through.

yeah, I'm pretty sure we were really mad at him at first. He tried to extort things out of us! He treated us like we were subhuman! ...and then they stuck him in our party instead of giving Heat back! It was a bad start for any relationship. ^^;

I've actually been running around in the last dungeon right now, leveling like crazy, so that friends of ours can see the end sometimg soon. I'd forgotten how much I just enjoyed playing it. :3

HE THREATENED TO KILL CIELO. How is that supposed to be ok? Argh.

There's no fix for a bad day like devouring your enemies. I'm pretty convinced.

hah, yeah -- especially when you have a really good set of skills and you can terrify the bejesus out of everything in your path. >3

I'm at that glorious point where nobody is allowed to wear Atma Bonus, because they're all learning skills too fast for me to make enough money to keep up. prrr.

Some people just need to be eaten. *shrug*

...I don't think I got that, last playthough. I only got a handful of the rings. Maybe I'll try to do better this time.

Er, I think you know my feelings on Roland. And yes, he is shamelessly literary, which is why I have so much fun writing him. What L said above about Roland not being an epic-scale character is part of why I love him so much; he's in a world he doesn't understand, and he knows it, and he tries to make sense of it the only way he can, but the tricks he knows don't really work anymore. And then he gets sense slapped into him, sucks it up, and changes, or does his damned best to. He's brave in spite of himself, and I love that about him.

I. I don't know. I want to like him? I think, given half a chance and the understanding that he is IN NO WAY a replacement for Heat, I will like him. And, I mean...I just got to the scene at the end of the next dungeon, where he joins the party? And, I have to admit: "I'll fight alongside you. If I fail you in some way, you can kill me." to a bunch of cannibalistic AI demons? Pretty fucking ballsy. So, that helps. I'm not finding him nearly as self-pitying this playthrough as I did last time either, which also helps a lot.

Though. Between Fred showing up as well when he joins the party, and the look-o'-death Fred gives him in the previous cutscene? I would LOVE to have been a fly on the wall for that conversation. <3

So yeah. I wouldn't say I'm really there yet? But I'm trying to give him a more fair playthrough than he got last time.
