DDS fanart; Gale/Lupa
It sounds like everyone else on the internet is still as off their write/draw as I am. I. Er. Find that vaguely comforting? In the meantime, though, have some two-hour Gale/Lupa.

asjdghkl, it doesn't look off from here. ♥
I love how comfortable the intimacy is between them.

I've been taking comfort in how widespread the issue is, too, honestly. At least it's an epidemic instead of a personal problem! XD

I just keep thinking, y'know... if they'd just had a little more time... It's a pairing I want to do more with, for sure.

I know, right? I miss seeing my Flist explode, but it's nice to not be the only one. <3

I don't know a thing about this fandom, but I agree w/ L, the art doesn't look off at all!

Really like the expression and the highlights on the collarbones of the one in front, and the skintone of the one in back is gorgeous.

I think I flailed at you about this fandom before? Digital Devil Saga? I think it's fabulous, and if you were only going to play one game (or rather two, since the sequel is pretty much disk 2 of the same story) then this would be it? Yeah. >.>

But the art! Thank you, I'm glad you thought it turned out ok. I was really 'meh' about doing anything creative still, but I really wanted to post something, so...:D I'm happy it seems to have worked., particularly Lupa's skintone. I want to do more subjects with darker skin; I think it lets you use colors and coloring techniques that don't work as well with very pale skin, so it's interesting to me.

Yes, you *did* mention DDS! Loyalty! (I so fail at games. My loss, because the character design is amazing. Nocturne? Woah!)

Actually, if you don't mind my asking, what kind of techniques do you use on skin? I usually start light, play around with Dodge/Burn, Colour-pick whatever's nearby, then Smudge until it looks OK (I hope).

OHNOES HERE COMES THE TEEL DE----

I start with a medium tone, the general color that I want things to be, then take a big brush--like maybe half to a third the width of whatever I want to shade--and mark out the general areas where the shadows'll fall with a slightly darker and either slightly more- or slightly less-saturated tone (depending on how saturated the base-color is). Then I take a slightly smaller brush and blend a slightly smaller area of darker shadow, with more detail. Then I do that again about two or three more times, if I want it to be pretty and smooth and realistic, or I wave my hands and call it good without if I'm being lazy. Once that's done, I do the same with the highlights, though I like areas of shine so I usually just do the big sweep and a couple of spots of intense light for that. Kind of unrealistic though. *shrug*

If you have a tablet, you can set your color...um density? I think they call it in my old-ass version of photoshop? Anyway, you can set that to be pressure sensitive, which helps a lot with blending, as does taking colors that aren't too much off from the last one. Also, if you turn down the opacity on your paintbrush--say, to half or so-- and pick one of the two colors that need to be blended and then go over that softly with a big brush, that's another blending method that gives you more control than smudge, I think.

I don't like dodge/burn--except very rarely for certain details on hair or something textured like that--because you can't control the colors you get, and a lot of the time it seems like those tools ramp up the saturation more than I want them to, or too quickly? Anyway, that's what I do. I. Er. Here endeth the TL;DR.

Artgeeking is my happy place! I have a Tablet and I have named the thing.

I know what you mean for dodge/burn. Those rusty-salmon tones near the eyes that come out of nowhere? Ick. But it works when I'm trying quick and dirty modelling on fingers or something, esp if I've decided to change the pose in mid-stream. ("It'll be more expressive if she holds the book like *this*" kind of thing.)

Do you set up a palette beforehand or pick on the fly? I ask because many of your pieces have brilliant tapestry colours.

argh. I haaaaaaaaaate having to change positioning on things I've already started coloring. Sometimes I leave in things that bother me if I notice them too far along, just because I hate having to go back and change my linework, and make the flats match, and make the shading blend when everything is all different now, and... argh. argh. I usually show someone my work when I get to the line-art or the flats and just ask if anything looks weird, just to avoid that.

I mostly just pick on the fly. I do pick the general colors that'll dominate the piece at the flats stage, but... Well. Color is the thing I'm singularly most interested in, in my art, so I just have a lot of fun tweaking them until they play off each other and make each other stronger.

Tablet's the Great Enabler for letting me change things as I go. (Unlike, say, watercolours with their unforgivinig ways.)

Holding a piece up to a mirror's supposed to help the artist find flaws. That's not much help with a computer screen ... though I suppose you could FLIP the work and look at it that way. (Y/N?) I'll try it on the piece I'm playing with now.

Oh yeh I can tell you like colour.♥

Yeah, you can flip it. Doesn't hurt your pic any. I'm lazy and not really as interested in anatomy, so I usually don't. Er. I know, it's bad. *sigh*

Watercolors suck. I'm always stupidly impressed at people who can get actual pictures with them. O.O At least oil you can go back and change things later.

Hah! Yes, flipping works. (just tried it)

Thanks for taking the time to share all this art-process info. It's seriously cool.

Np, as you can probably tell, I like talking about it. I keep thinking I want to put together a tutorial, but then it seems really self-indulgent, so I don't. Hrm.

Aren't they? I heart Gale so much. So smooshy, and not even realizing it. <333

That works for me. Though I think summer burn-out still has something to do with it too.

No worries; whenever you have time. :D
