Fandom Poll
I feel sort of weirdly in-between fandoms, lately. Not all that interested anymore in my previous big fandoms, but not in love with something new yet either. So! Clearly, it's time to appeal to the great god Internets.

I have actually seen none of your ticky options! But I would probably still look at them! :3

(okay, so, I have seen a liiiittle bit of FF and SH, just from watching over other people's shoulders, but not enough to absorb and plot. Also I am teeeerrible at playing that sort of genre all by myself, so! Fail)

I am obligated to reccomend Gurren Lagann, if you have not already seen it (today, I have no brain) because it is what is eating me right now, and. Yeah. Also Okami? Have you played that? It's beautiful and full of NEAT MYTH STUFF and you're an adorable wolf that is also an artist and you get your powers from drawing :3

pls excuse if I just explained a game you have already beaten to you .____.

I haven't heard of that game! It sounds really fun; I'll have to give it a look. What is Gurren Lagann about? I looked at some of the pictures, and the art is a bit wonky...but everyone seems kind of head over heels about it, so there must be something awesome there.

If you like horror games or puzzle, Myst-type games, I'd really recommend Fatal Frame, particularly Fatal Frame 2. Twins! Epistle storytelling! Rural cults! Exciting (and really pretty) environments to explore with hidden passageways and secret rooms and interesting puzzles. 's one of my favorite games. But yeah...better to play in a group than alone, for sure. Not as scary as eternal darkness, but still pretty scary at times.

You should! It's totally fun! Although sometimes I feel retarded because it's like "Draw a straight line" and I try and I try and the best I can do is like "diagonal" or "only SLIGHTLY curvy" orz But it is really fabulous. [Here] is the official site, which gives you a good idea of the art style. It's like playing in a scroll.

Gurren Lagann does have a different art style, but it grows on you. Actually, I really like it -- it's...dynamic? And sort of...just as over the top as the rest of the show. Because that's what it is -- over the top.

It's sort of...post-apocalyptic...space...robots? With animal people and people who don't wear shirts. Also it is often completely ridiculous, and the first 15 episodes contain about as many dick jokes as you can pack into that many frames. So. It's often very ridiculous.

On the other hand, it's also fairly meaningful, imo. There are a lot of themes about growth and freedom, and finding yourself. Managed to make me cry in a few spots, that sort of thing. Also, I have never liked mecha anime, but the robots are all really expressive (and have facial expressions and mouths that move when the people in them talk)

also, fanservice. I mean, the main girl does pretty much wear no clothing ever, but the two main boys are also shirtless. And there is naked prison fighting, and a hotsprings ep where the boys are completely naked (with clever censorship) for ...pretty much the entire ep.

So! Good times.

I am okay at puzzles, but not really great. And I scare easy. Which is usually why I cannot play them alone ^^;;;

Sometimes ridiculous is exactly what you need. <3 I--and probably a lot of people--have a bad habit of taking myself way too seriously. So, awesome. I'll poke boy to download the first couple of eps tonight. :Db

Ah. Perhaps not the best fit for you then. Still. Awesome games.

Yeah, like. You just have to accept that it's going to be over the top (there are several instances where people appear to get powerups from yelling loudly) and it's a pretty good ride ^______^ (also, I would reccommend skipping episode four -- some new characters show up, but they show up again later and you don't learn anything SUPER important about them that you can't pick up otherwise. Also everyone is out of character -- and when you can tell that, only four eps in, you know somebody is Doing It Wrong -- and the animation is TERRIBLE. The head of the studio apparently had to leave the company, because of episode four. So. Yes. just. Skip that one. And there is a director's cut version of ep six that L linked the other day, which is much better than the officially aired ep 6)

Alas, yes. I really do love watching them! But am no good at the doing. It is a shame.

*cracks up* Yelling loudly? That is hilarious. Makes me want to watch the show just for that. <3 So. Skip episode four entirely, and get the director's cut of ep. 6? I think I can remember that.

Do Laylah or Cadence like that sort of thing? Cause, I mean. The stories are really good, lots of myth/urban legend stuff, and interesting methods of storytelling.

I'm pretty bad at anything that takes reflexes, but we'll see if Cadence is up for it. Because it does sound really cool, and I sort of feel like I want to give games a chance when they do something interesting and unusual. ^_^

It's...well, catching the ghosts as they move past you is a pretty decent chunk of the game, I won't say it's not? But, I've played it through myself, and I suck at basically everything gaming-related ever, so you can definitely get through the game without being good at that. A lot of the random shots are just to boost your score, rather than having any effect on game-play, far as I can tell.

man your layout makes it hard to read comments! It is like an eye test!
BY THE WAY I WANTED TO ASK -- do you still want me to do your layout with that picture of Argilla you gave me? I realize it has now been several months and maybe you have a new favorite picture or something

Yes, yelling ^_^ I found that, after watching a few episodes, I wanted to end all of my sentences! With exclamation points! And say things like! Don't give up! Grab your tomorrow with your own two hands! Etc!

Yeah--it's a little frustrating. I was thinking of changing it soon anyway. I'd love it with Argilla. She's not my favorite, but she's fun, and easiest to work with from a graphics standpoint.

AWESOME.

We will keep an eye out for it in any case, and pick up a copy! I can more or less manage, say, Kingdom Hearts, though I am not *good* at it. But I can get by! So we'll see how it goes. ^_^

I have heard good things about Fatal Frame! And I do pretty well with games that require reflexes, in general.

The only part I would be worried about is stressing myself out too much. I am weird, I guess - for some reason Portal was sort of terrifying for me, for instance. Something about the creepy robot speech and the blood when you get hit and the lack of a visible health bar or a weapon to take them out with, (Other than running up and kicking them or dropping them through a portal.) >_> But, like, I am fine with shooting games, and more obviously scary things like those terrifying zombie games, so we could certainly see. ^^

Actual response re poll: What Laylah said! I will probably look at things no matter the fandom. and, uh, I need to be better at actually commenting on them, too. >_>

Cool. I think it's ok--your camera functions as a weapon, so you're not quite as helpless as all that. Really, the scary comes from the ambiance, and from certain other game mechanics like, say, not being able to see well.

No worries! I'm happy to hear that you look at them, actually. <3

ah, here I was about to recommend Okami, and Kiwi beat me to it! partly because the colors are just so goddamn wonderful. it really doesn't look like any other game I've played. But also on a sillier note because Ammy, your character, looks a lot like the puppy you just got. ^_^

Filling out the poll is hard -- I am not familiar with any of those texts except for Lovecraft, and I haven't read any of him in years (though I do still have some books around). I am reading...next to nothing these days, even when I do know fandoms. But I love your art and would probably look at that no matter what fandom it was. :3

It's available for both the PS2 and the Wii.

Also I am not really doing it justice; there's also lots of really cool stuff from Japanese folklore and myth worked into the story. ♥

Ps2! I think they are making a wii version -- which would be REALLY cool and useful, for the drawing bit -- but I don't think it's out yet.

This is excellent news though! Having a system that can play awesome games always makes things easier. <3 I'll look for a copy next time I go down to the game store.

Hi there! Not sure if I’ve ever commented on your journal before (I’m horrible at commenting – sorry), but I’ve seen quite a bit of your art/writing and seen you around my dear friend [info]regicidaldwarf’s journal, so I felt it was about time. Also, you are one of a very, very small minority of people who do anything for Saiunkoku Monogatari, and that is exciting even if it isn’t currently an active fandom for you. Someone else who’s even heard of SaiMono counts as an accomplishment, *gets out proud tiny fandoms flag to wave*

I know it’s a presumptuous of me to offer advice, near stranger that I am, but, well, I’m told those rules apply slightly less on the internet. So, given the fandoms and themes you’ve expressed interest in in the past, I think you might get a kick out of Amatsuki. Manga is scantlated here
.

Plot seems a bit generic at first glance – Japanese high school boy enters a Virtual Reality version of Edo era Japan and finds himself unable to leave. But the author does play with it in a way that I find genuinely interesting and innovative. Key points of why I’d rec this series to you, in particular.

1) Strong female lead. Of the three “main” characters of this manga, the woman in the group is clearly the tank. She takes the lead in any sort of fighting, offensive or defensive. Seriously, she’s awesome and I’m a little in love with her.

2) Genderqueer character. One of the central figures in the manga has some really fabulous gender ambiguities. I’m honestly not sure whether or not se has a gender, is bigendered, doesn’t have a gender, or…I don’t know. I’m not sure se does either. Bonus points for the fact that said gender ambiguity is not tied up too heavily with birth sex, which we do actually know.

3) I really like the art.

4) Xeno potential. A high percentage of the cast is not, in fact, human. Most of these characters have multiple forms, some more humanoid than others.

5) Moral ambiguity. Of the many factions fighting with and over our hero, none of them really qualify as “villains”. They’re just people (or demons) with a different perspective and opinion, all of which are valid.

So, there’s my suggestion. Really, it’s fun, you should give it a shot. I found volume 1 a bit slow, but it picks up after that, and it’s definitely worth at least a readthrough.

Hi! It's nice to meet you; I'm flattered you've been looking at my work, and always happy to make new friends. :Db I had a really nice visit with regicidaldwarf the other day, too--she's a cool person, so a friend of hers is doubly welcome.

I'd like to do some more with Saimono actually, at some point. Have you seen the IJ comm? It's. Not dead yet? But could definitely use some extra love, if you wanted to go say hi.

Amatsuki! We watched the first two or three episodes of the anime, I think, and then forgot about it. Should really go see what happened with that... But also, wow, thank you for pointing out the manga--that art is GORGEOUS. O.O I'm kind of lol'ing at the reasons you chose to rec this to me on, though. Apparently I really am that transparent! *giggle*

She mentioned she was thinking of swinging by to visit you; glad that worked out!

I - I really should check out the comm, you're right. But as much as I long for their to be a SaiMono fandom, I'm also terrified at all the ways it could go horribly horribly wrong. Still, that looks like a pretty good place to start! *pokes around a bit* I also need to see about getting more of the second season now that most of it's been translated. *sob* I'm so behind!

What I've seen of Amatsuki anime has been alright! But it loses quite a bit of the nuance and, as much as I've been enjoying the manga, it really doesn't have that much nuance to spare *cough*. Plus, as I mentioned before, I'm really partial to the manga art.
See, those points are all things that push buttons for me, so they weren't exactly that hard to notice. :D
